Anything for Selenas!

My most recent WIP is a middle-grade book inspired by Tejano legend and ultimate shero Selena Quintanilla. Selena is an inspiration to millions, even 26 years after her death. The Netflix mini-series based on her early years released by Netflix last December is proof. 25 million households worldwide tuned in to watch in the first month.

My main character, eleven-year-old Rosalia Incarnation Flores was not around when Selena was performing around her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas. However, she still knows everything to know about the slain pop star, thanks to her grandmother. After her grandmother dies, she starts writing to Selena in her journal.

Like Rosalia and her grandmother, I’m a huge fan of Selena. Growing up in Texas in the ’80s, I enjoyed seeing Selena perform a few times. I was even present for her last performance on February 26, 1995, at the famous Astrodome in my hometown of Houston, Texas. March is the month of her passing. She will forever be missed by those who have been able to watch her perform, listen to her music, watch her movie, or the mini-series about her life. Selena will forever be "La reina de la onda Tejana.”

The photo above is from my visit to the Selena Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas.
